Razor Electric Scooters Dominate the Market
It doesn’t matter how much you look around on the internet or how many different makes of scooter that you test ride, the “Best Electric Scooters For Kids 2014” list is always going to be dominated by the Razor scooter company. If you are unfamiliar with the scooter scene, Razor is a Californian company that has been making great scooters since 2000. Although they are still a relatively young organisation, they are now considered by most to be the No.1 scooter company in the world. There are some cheaper imitations of the Razor electric scooters on the market for those with budgets that can’t quite stretch to the razor price tags, but they are generally not quite as good and often have a shorter lifespan.
The Different Types of Kids Electric Scooters
UPDATE: The E90 and E100 scooters have now been replaced by the Power Core Versions. Read my comparison Review of the Power Core E90 vs E100 is here.
There are a number of different types of kids electric scooters and I am going to explain which model I think is the best in each category. The most obvious difference is in relation to the recommended age range for the scooters. They are generally divided into those designed for kids aged 8+ and those designed for kids aged 12+. Obviously, the models that are designed for older kids tend to have faster top speeds and more complicated throttle and braking mechanisms. There are also some special models that don’t have the normal kick scooter shape, like the Razor Pocket Mods.
The Best Electric Scooters for Pre-Teens (8 years+)
If you are looking for an electric scooter for a child aged 8 years or more, then the choice is between the Razor E90 and the Razor E100. Whilst these models are very similar in appearance, there are some important differences. The main differences are:
- The E100 has 2 x 12v batteries, whereas the E90 has 1
- The E100’s top speed is 10 mph vs the E90’s 9 mph
- The E100 uses a twist-throttle vs the E90’s push button
- The E100 has a hand lever brake vs the E90’s foot brake
- The E100 is heavier and larger
- The E100 has a taller extendable handlebar
- The E100 is about $15-20 more expensive ($119)
I have previously written an in-depth comparison review of these scooters to help you decide between them. There is also a short YouTube video on this comparison review page. You can also read my Full Razor E90 Review here and my Full Razor E100 Review here. Personally, I would choose the E100 for my kids when they reach the right age, since it has a bit more torque (without being too powerful) and I’m sure that they would be able to manage the lever brake and twist throttle. But, you know your kids’ abilities best and some might need a more gentle introduction to the thrilling world of electric scooters.
The Best Electric Scooters for Teenagers (12 years+)
If you are looking for an electric scooter for a child aged 12 years or more, then the obvious choice is between the Razor E200 and the Razor E300. Although it is perfectly possible for teenagers to use the E90 and E100 electric scooters, they might want a little extra speed and control. There are some important differences between the E200 and the E300 Scooters:
- The E300 has a variable speed throttle
- The E300’s top speed is 15 mph vs the E200’s 12 mph
- The E300 has 10″ tires vs the E200’s 8″ tires
- The E300 has a super-sized deck
- The E300 is about $40 more expensive ($230)
You can read my Full Razor E200 Review here and my Full Razor E300 Review here. The E200 is a nice scooter, but the E300 is in a class of its own in my opinion. You get a really nice 15 mph out of it and the variable speed throttle make a very big difference to its handling and control.
The Razor Pocket Mod Electric Scooter (12 years+)
The Razor Pocket Mod Electric Scooter is a very different beast to the E series. It is a very stylish looking copy of an Italian Mod Scooter that comes in a choice of black, pink and lilac colors. It comes with a variable speed twist throttle and can reach a top speed of 15 mph. Your child should be able to ride about 10 miles before having to recharge the battery.
