Razor E100 Electric Scooter Review

April 7, 2014 By Kristian

US Price: $120
UK Price: £135-168
Top Speed: 10 mph
Age Range: 8+

Overview

UPDATE: The E90 and E100 scooters have now been replaced by the Power Core Versions. Read my comparison Review of the Power Core E90 vs E100 is here.

The Razor E100 Electric Scooter is a high quality machine designed to enable pre-teens to to zip safely around the neighbourhood at relatively low speeds. Unlike other models that can achieve a standing start, the E100 has an added safety feature that first requires a push start to 3 mph before the rider is able to fire up the ultra-quiet chain-driven motor by twisting the throttle.

Once the motor has been started, the scooter can quickly reach its top speed of 10 mph – fast enough to have fun but not too fast for a pre-teen child to handle safely! Most 8 year olds can probably cycle at speeds of at least 10 mph so this is not something to be overly concerned about. Of course, you should always make sure that your child wears an approved cycle / scooter helmet at all times when using the E100. I recommend the Razor V-17 Helmet.

Although the recommended minimum age is 8 years+, this can only ever be a very rough guideline since kids mature at different rates. You know your child best and I am sure that some physically confident 6-7 year olds could manage to control the E100 without too many problems.

What’s Great about the E100?

The speed of the scooter can be easily controlled using the twist handle throttle and the hand-operated front brake. The rider has a choice of 2 standing positions on the deck of the scooter: one foot ahead or feet side-by-side.

The 40 minute run time is enough to travel about 5 miles before the pair of 12v batteries need recharging (8 hours for a full charge). In fact, I have heard some people boasting that they can get up to an hour of use between charges. The top speed of 10 mph is perfect for a pre-teen child in my opinion.

When not in use, the E100 can be stored in an upright position using the retractable kickstand. You can also fold down the handlebars if you need to keep the scooter in a more confined space.

The E100 requires some assembly but fortunately the battery, charger and tools are supplied in the box and it is not too difficult to build the scooter. Personally, I think that this need for minor assembly is part of the fun and helps you and your child learn a little more about how it works and what you might need to do in the future if the scooter ever needs a little maintenance. Please note that the first battery charge should be for 12 hours rather than the usual 8 hours.

The height of the handlebar can be very easily adjusted to fit your child and the scooter can continue to be used as your child grows.

My Verdict

The Razor E100 Electric Scooter is the best entry-level machine for pre-teen kids in my opinion and for that reason it gets my “Best Buy” recommendation. Its maximum speed is just right to make it fun to use without parents worrying about their child being unable to control it safely. I have already promised my 4 year old twin boys that they can have one each for their 6th birthday. We are fortunate enough to have a very safe meandering path in a nearby grassland area and I’m sure that they will be able to manage the modest power of this scooter at that age.

The only other Razor electric scooter that would be suitable as a first machine would be the E90. The main differences being that its top speed is 9 mph, it has a push-button throttle and a foot brake. If you think that your child might not be able to manage a handle bar brake or the twist-throttle of the E100, the E90 would be an excellent alternative.

That seems fun, great review, how old is the kid on the scooter, by the way, he handles it awesomely, i am thinking of getting one for my 5 years old kid but worried that he may be too little for it.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my website and leave a comment.

I am very jealous that these scooters weren’t around when I was a kid! I don’t know exactly how old the boy in the video was when he made it, but I would guess somewhere between 4 and 6. As I mention in my review, you will have a much better idea than the manufacturer about when your child is big enough and sensible enough to handle one of these electric scooters. I suppose it also depends where in your local area they would be able to use it. Obviously, if there is a nearby park with lots of open space or you have a large yard, then I would be far less worried than if your 5 year old was going to just be using it on the sidewalk (where more control would be required due to narrowness and proximity of vehicles). Either way, I always advise that kids should wear helmets on electric and push scooters. My 5 year old twins are always wiping each other out as they compete for first place on their push scooters and their helmets have saved them from a couple of quite nasty bumps.

thank you for the fast reply
i am still undecided what should i get him, E90 or E100, do you have an idea if these can be used as kick scooters when battery runs out, i am leaning towards E90 since it is lighter and easier to handle (maybe) by little ones.

No, you can’t use them as kick scooters when the battery runs out.

I would definitely go for the E90 if it were my 5 year old. Apart from the weight and general handling issues, the E90 has a foot-operated brake and requires a push-start rather than just pressing the “go” button. This makes the transition from a kick scooter much easier since they will be used to braking with their foot and starting up is smoother than just pressing the button alone. You can read my E90 vs E100 post here.

          Hope this helps.

I would definitely choose the Razor Power Core E100 over the older Razor E100 scooter due to the Power Core motor and the increase battery run time of up to 60 minutes.

You can read my full review of the Razor Core E100 for more information.
