Razor Pocket Mod Electric Scooter Review

April 9, 2014 By Kristian

US Price: $229-$249
UK Price: £320
Top Speed: 15 mph
Age Range: 12+

Overview

The Razor Pocket Mod Electric Scooter is a high-performance scaled down machine with a chain-driven electric motor and a vintage-inspired body. It looks every bit as chic as one of the adult Italian scooters that it’s modelled on, but at a fraction of the price.

When I first saw a picture of these scooters I actually thought that they were full-sized vintage mod scooters rather than battery-powered replicas. They are just so well crafted with great attention to detail.

With the help of one of these scooters, your child will be able to enjoy the freedom of riding around the neighbourhood in style whilst the Pocket Mod’s top speed of 15 mph is fast enough to allow them to make good progress without you having to worry about them losing control.

The minimum recommended age is 12 years, but If your child is physically mature enough to ride a bicycle I don’t see why thy wouldn’t be able to manage one of these at an earlier age. Manufacturers are cautious by nature when it comes to age limits and their guidelines often assume that your child is developmentally below average. At the end of the day, you know your child’s capabilities better than anyone else and you should exercise your own judgement on this issue.

Of course, even at these relatively low speeds, you should always ensure that your child wears a safety helmet. You can also add elbow and knee pads for extra protection.

The Pocket Mod’s Best Features

The Pocket Mod has a variable speed twist-throttle acceleration control mechanism that can be used to reach a top speed of 15 mph. So, it has more that enough power to make your child feel as if they are getting somewhere without causing you to worry about their safety too much. Your child can probably cycle faster than 15 mph so they ought to be able to control the Pocket Mod scooter at top speed without too much difficulty.

The rear suspension system and 30cm pneumatic tyres help to give a smooth ride on most urban terrains and the hand operated rear brake gives you child extra control over the scooter.

You won’t have to worry about your child having to ride to their friend’s house with plastic carrier bags swinging around on the handlebars or an overloaded backpack on their shoulders, since the Pocket Mod comes with a generous storage compartment under the seat.

The run time is excellent and will enable your child to cover about 10 miles on a single charge, which means that these scooters can keep going for about twice as long as a machine like the Razor E100. This ought to provide them with plenty of time for touring the neighbourhood or visiting their friends in style before having to recharge the battery. It takes 12 hours to fully recharge the battery, so you can simply plug it into the mains power supply over night and it will be ready for use again in the morning. You can also buy extra batteries separately if your child needs to travel more than 10 miles in a day.

When not in use, the Pocket mod can be stored in a standing position with the help of the fitted retractable kickstand.

The Pocket Mod requires some assembly, but it doesn’t take long and you really just have to fit the front wheel and handlebars to the main body of the scooter. It is certainly no more complicated than assembling a new bicycle.

 My Verdict

The Razor Pocket Mod Electric Scooter is just a fantastic product. It looks great, it’s nippy without being overpowered and it’s very easy to use. What more could you possible ask for? The target market is primarily teenaged girls, but the black model will also appeal to boys – my 4 year old twin boys are certainly very excited by the video reviews of the Pocket Mod and were a little crest-fallen when I explained that they were too young to ride one!
