Razor Power Core E90 Review

March 10, 2017 By Kristian

The New Razor Power Core E90!

This a review of the new and much improved version of the Razor E90 Electric Scooter.

It is called the Razor Power Core E90 and not only does it look infinitely better than the older model but it also comes fitted with some much improved features too.

In short, the main improvements are:

  • Increased battery time of about 80 minutes
  • 50% more power
  • New Power Core Technology
  • Hand brake.
  • Much better styling!

Comparison Review of the Power Core E90 vs E100 is here.

The Power Core E90’s Main Features

#1 Stopping & Starting

Just like the old E90, the Power Core version uses a kick-start and push-button throttle mechanism to get it going.

The way this works is pretty simple. You just push off as if you were riding a normal non-electric scooter, which “kick-starts” the motor into action. Once you’re moving, you press the throttle button with your right thumb in order to keep it going.

Unlike the old E90, the Power Core version does NOT use a foot brake as its main stopping mechanism. Instead, Razor have opted to fit a standard hand brake lever and it operates just like a push bike brake.

The old E90’s foot brake was controversial in that some people loved it and others absolutely hated it.

Personally, I thought that the foot brake was a good idea for those young kids that were used to riding push scooters that had the same sort of mechanism. Other people took the view that most kids of 8 years now how to ride a bike and would prefer a conventional bike-style hand brake.

The argument over that issue has gone now though since both the Power Core E90 and the Power Core E100 have the hand brake fitted.

#2 Speed and Acceleration

The Power Core E90 scooter has a top speed of about 10 miles per hour, which is 1 more than the old E90. So, there is not much of a difference on that issue. Razor does, however, boast that the motor delivers more torque even if it does not result in a massive difference to the top speed.

Whilst some of the older kids might be a little disappointed at a 1mph increase over the old E90, I suspect that many parents will be quite happy with the fact that Razor have not got too carried away with themselves and have chosen not to increase the top speed of the this scooter to a level that might be difficult for small children to handle safely.

If you want more speed and acceleration for your child, you can simply look at the Power Core E100 instead.

The increased torque and speed is due to the new “Power Core” high torque hub motor that Razor have developed.

One other important difference between this scooter and the new Power Core E100 is that the E90 version does NOT have a variable speed throttle. Instead, the rider needs to hold their thumb down on the throttle button to engage full power. It is either full on or full off – there is no in-between power option. You can adjust the speed by releasing the throttle button for a time, which will cause the scooter to slow down.

Again, if you want a motorbike style twist-grip variable speed throttle, you should consider the E100 version.

Another great things about the Power Core E90 is that it is very low maintenance and there is no annoying chain drive to align and tension correctly.

#3 Battery Run-time

This is perhaps the biggest improvement that has been made to the new Power Core E90.

The old version could get 50 minutes of use before needing to be re-charged (which takes about 8 hours!). The new version can go for about 80 minutes on a single charge, which is more than 50% longer.

#4 Scooter Weight & User Weight Limit

The Power Core E90 weighs 23 pounds, which is about the same as the old version.

#5 Styling

Personally, I think that the Power Core E90 styling is much better than the original E90, which was pretty ordinary and uninspired.

If you were an 8 year-old, which one would you rather be seen riding by your friends?

#6 Recommended Minimum Rider Age

Razor’s recommended minimum rider age for this new scooter is 8 years and upwards.

Bear in mind that this is purely a recommendation that is no doubt designed to protect them against being sued if younger kids use the scooter and have an accident.

You will have a much better idea of your own kids’ physical abilities and limitations and you can make your own mind up about whether or not they are ready for a motorised scooter.

My own view is that my 6-year old twins would have no problems handling this machine. They can make their push scooters go faster that 10mph and the controls are pretty simple to understand and operate safely.

Although there is probably no law to say that kids using these scooters must wear a helmet, I would strongly recommend that you get one. Even at 10mph, a child’s head striking the sidewalk can still cause a nasty injury.

#7 Maximum Rider Weight Limit

If you or your child weigh more than 120 pounds, then you are out of luck.

Weigh under 120 pounds? Then you are good to go!

The Power Core E90 in Action!

I would never buy a kids electric scooter without first seeing it in action.

Words alone can only achieve so much when trying to explain how these machines operate in the hands of kids.

So, here are a couple of helpful videos of the Power Core E90 in action.

My Verdict

The Razor Power Core E90 is a much better kids electric scooter than the old E90 model.

Aside from the better styling (which is not something to underestimate when kids are concerned these days), the biggest improvement is the extended battery life.

The old E90’s battery life of about 50 minutes was pretty respectable, but the new Power Core E90’s much longer battery life of about 80 minutes is a dramatic improvement and is likely to lead to fewer frustrated kids who have to stop riding because they have run out of power.

This extends the range to about 13 miles before re-charging.

If you buy a second battery, you’re looking almost 3 hours of use before you need to get the charger out!

As a first kids electric scooter, the Razor Power Core E90 is going to be pretty hard to beat.

If I find anything better on the market, you can be sure that I will edit this review and let you know the full details.

If you think that your child is ready to handle something with a bit more speed, a rubber front tire, and a variable-speed throttle, check out the Razor Power Core E100 here.

Where to Buy the NEW Razor Power Core E90 Electric Scooter

It’s very hard to find good deals on the old version of the E90 Scooter and I wouldn’t bother even looking any more since the new version is so much better and available at very reasonable prices.

In fact, the Power Core E90 will cost you pretty much the same as the old E90 would have cost when it was freely available to buy.
