Razor E200 Electric Scooter Review

April 14, 2014 By Kristian

US Price: $199.99
UK Price: £230
Top Speed: 12 mph
Age Range: 12+

Overview

The Razor E200 Electric Scooter is the first in the E-Series that is designed for use by older children (12 years +) and does not require a push-start before the motor kicks in. Older kids don’t need this extra safety mechanism and they can start the E200’s high-torque ultra-quiet chain-driven motor by simply twisting the throttle.

Once the motor has been started, the scooter can quickly (but smoothly) reach its top speed of 12 mph. Of course, you should always ensure that your child wears an approved cycle / scooter helmet at all times when using the E200. I recommend the Razor V-17 Helmet.

Although the recommended minimum age is 12 years+, you know your child best and will have a much better idea of whether or not your own 10-11 year old could manage the rather modest power of this scooter. It’s not rocket science and, if your child can already manage a bicycle (which they probably ride faster than 12 mph) then they ought to be fine.

Just like the slightly less powerful E100 Scooter, the E200 has a twist-throttle and grip lever brake.

It is a pretty smooth ride due to the large 8-inch pneumatic front and rear tires, and it also comes with a full size deck and frame.

Although this scooter is primarily marketed as kids, the 100 kg / 220 lb weight limit is generous enough to enable most adults to use it too – great for mums and dads that desperately want to be able to “demonstrate” how to use it first!

What’s Great about the E200?

The speed of the scooter can be easily controlled using the twist handle throttle and the hand-operated front brake.

The 40 minute run time enough to travel about 8 miles before the pair of 12v batteries need recharging (8 hours for a full charge). The top speed of 12 mph is certainly more interesting for a teenager than the more leisurely 10 mph of the E100 scooter.

When not in use, the E200 can be stored in an upright position using the retractable kickstand. You can also fold down the handlebars if you need to keep the scooter in a more confined space.

The E200 requires some assembly but fortunately the battery, charger and tools are supplied in the box and it is not too difficult to build the scooter. Personally, I think that this need for minor assembly is part of the fun and helps you and your child learn a little more about how it works and what you might need to do in the future if the scooter ever needs a little maintenance. Please note that the first battery charge should be for 12 hours rather than the usual 8 hours.

The handlebar can be folded down for easy transportation and storage.

My Verdict

The Razor E200 Electric Scooter is a very nice scooter that will give teenagers a little more power than the E90 / E100 models. For many the 12 mph top speed will be enough, but I suspect others in this age bracket will be seriously tempted by the 15 mph and variable speed motor offered by the E300 model instead. I would certainly pay the extra money for the E300 if I had to make a choice between the two.

Since the E300 will set you back an extra $50 or so, this is a reasonably priced alternative to those on a tight budget or those that simply don’t need the extra power.
