Razor Electric Scooters – Just For Kids?

Razor was one of the first companies to start making electric scooters for sale in the USA and Canada.

Scooters were traditionally considered to be a child’s toy and so it made sense for them to start by making electric scooters that were designed to be ridden by kids.

Razor has been manufacturing kids’ electric scooters for many years now and they have proved to be very popular. These kids’ electric scooters were not, however, suitable for use by adults.

Yes, some of those kids’ electric scooters could be ridden by small adults, but they didn’t go very fast, and you looked a bit silly on them. So, aside from the occasional try out, these kids’ models were not practical to be used by adults on a daily basis for more practical purposes.

That has all changed now.

Razor has decided to take their experience and technology from their kids’ electric scooters and use it to build electric scooters that are specifically designed for adult use.

Of course, just because an electric scooter is designed and manufactured as being suitable for adult use, that does not mean that it is not also suitable for use by older kids.

Razor haven’t just developed a single adult electric scooter either. There are a few different options to choose from.  Some are more suitable for more recreational purposes, and others more suitable for serious commuting and local errands.

I am going to take a look at these Razor electric scooters for adults and tell you something about their most important features.

I hope that my Best Razor Electric Scooter for Adults post will help you to decide which of these scooters is most suitable for you or your older child.

Razor Electric Scooters – Adult Models

#1 Razor E Prime 3 Scooter

So, here are the main things that you need to know about the Razor E Prime 3 electric scooter.

The maximum rider weight for the Razor E Prime 3 scooter is 220 pounds.

The recommended minimum rider age is 18 years, but I see no reason why a mature older child could use one perfectly safely.

The scooter is pretty lightweight (24.2 pounds) and can be folded for easy transportation and compact storage. This makes it an excellent choice if you want to be able to use an electric scooter to access public transport as you can fold it and carry it while riding on the train or bus.

The E Prime 3 scooter has 2 x 8-inch tires. The rear tire is solid, but the front tire is air-filled for better control on uneven surfaces. It’s not quite as good in this department as the Razor EcoSmart Metro scooter (see below).

The Razor E Prime 3 scooter is powered by high-torque, 250W hub drive motor, which allows it to reach a maximum speed of 18 mph.

The E Prime 3 should get about 15 miles out of a single charge, and it is possible to buy extra battery packs if you need to extent this range.

The 250W hub-driven motor on the E Prime 3 scooter is activated through the use of a thumb-activated throttle system. It has variable speed control and a paddle lever that is very simple to use.

The braking system is comprised of a thumb-activated lever and is assisted by the use of the rear fender.

Since the E Prime 3 scooter is quite lightweight and portable, security might be a concern if you had to leave it outside a store. However, it comes with a security lock point. This takes the form of a ring built into the scooter frame that can be used to loop a chain lock through when you need to keep the scooter safe while you go about your business.

Here are some video reviews of the Razor E Prime 3 Electric Scooter.

#2 Razor EcoSmart Metro Scooter

The maximum rider weight for the Razor EcoSmart Metro is also 220 pounds.

Just like the E Prime 3 model, the recommended minimum rider age for the EcoSmart is also 18 years. The EcoSmart Metro could be used by an older child at your discretion.

The Razor EcoSmart Metro is heavier than the E Prime 3. It weighs about 65 pounds and does not fold away for easy carriage. So, it is less suitable for commuting trips if you also need to use public transport at some point on your journey. It is better designed for end-to-end journeys just using the scooter itself.

The Razor EcoSmart Metro comes fitted with much larger tires than most other electric scooters, including the E Prime 3 model. It benefits from 1 x 16-inch pneumatic tires and this makes it much better on uneven ground.

The Razor EcoSmart Metro scooter is powered by high-torque, 500W hub drive motor, which is twice as powerful as the E Prime scooters, but this gas to take into account the fact that the scooter is heavier to pull.

The maximum speed of the EcoSmart scooter is also 18 mph.

The EcoSmart scooter should get about 12 miles out of a single charge.

The throttle and braking mechanisms on the EcoSmart Metro scooter are more sophisticated than those on the E Prime 3 scooter, which has a more basic method of operation.

The 500W chain-driven motor on the EcoSmart Metro scooter is activated through the use of a proper motorcycle-style twist-grip throttle mechanism. Unlike the push-button throttles found on many electric scooters (including the E Prime 3), this twist-grip throttle gives you the feeling of genuine variability of speed.

The braking system is comprised of a lever hand brake, which is operated in the same way as the braking system found on a pedal cycle or motorcycle.

You also get a storage basket and luggage rack (detachable), and a comfortably padded seat.

The wide deck of the scooter is made from bamboo.

Here are some video reviews of the Razor EcoSmart Metro Electric Scooter.
