Razor E300 Electric Scooter Review

April 14, 2014 By Kristian

US Price: $236
UK Price: £279.99
Top Speed: 15 mph
Age Range: 12+

Overview

The Razor E300 Electric Scooter is the fastest and smoothest model in the E-Series and is a genuine contender for the title of the best kids scooter. It is designed for use by older children (12 years +) and is much more powerful than the E90 and E100 models.

Unlike the E90 and E100, the E300′s high-torque ultra-quiet chain-driven motor is engaged immediately by simply twisting the throttle towards your body. The E200 also has this feature, but it only has a top speed of 12 mph and does not have the E300’s variable speed throttle.

Once the motor has been started, the scooter can quickly (but smoothly) reach its top speed of 15 mph. This is an excellent amount of power for a scooter than costs less than $250 and you will certainly feel like you are making good progress whilst riding it. Of course, you should ensure that your child wears an approved cycle / scooter helmet at all times when using the E300. I recommend the Razor V-17 Helmet.

I would be inclined to respect the minimum age recommendation of 12 years with the E300 more than the E200, since it is significantly more powerful than the other E-Series models and requires more control and rider input due to the variable speed throttle. An extra 3-5 mph might not sound a lot, but it does make a big difference to the feel and enjoyment of the scooter.

Just like the less powerful E100 Scooter and E200 Scooter, the E300 has a twist-throttle and grip lever brake.

It is also a very smooth ride due to the extra-wide 10-inch pneumatic front and rear tires

The super-sized deck and frame make the E300 more suitable for larger kids and adults.

Whilst the E300 electric scooter is designed primarily for teenagers, it could also be used by adults looking to commute a short distance to work in good weather conditions. The only note of caution I would add is that if you are a heavy adult at the top of the weight limit (220 lbs) or need to ride up hills, this scooter will probably not meet your needs. You will probably need to consider buying a more powerful machine.

What’s Great about the E300?

The speed of the scooter can be easily controlled using the twist handle throttle and the hand-operated front brake.

I love the fact that the throttle control on the E300 allows you to vary the speed without having to use the brake. Don’t expect ultra accurate and precise control though – with a top speed of 15 mph, the range for variation is modest. However, it feels a lot more responsive and adjustable than the single speed models.

The 40 minute run time ought to be enough to travel about 8 miles before the pair of 12v batteries need recharging (8 hours for a full charge). The top speed of 15 mph is plenty fast enough for a teenager and they will have no cause to complain when you compare it with the relatively slow top speeds of the E100 scooter (10 mph) and E200 scooter (12 mph).

When not in use, the E300 can be stored in an upright position using the retractable kickstand. You can also fold down the handlebars if you need to keep the scooter in a more confined space. The only slight downside is that the handlebar cannot be locked into the folded up position, but most kids shouldn’t need to carry the scooter for long anyway.

The E300 requires some assembly (not much) but fortunately the battery, charger and tools are supplied in the box and it is not too difficult to build the scooter. I would suggest that the first battery charge should be for about 18 hours rather than the usual 8 hours.

The handlebar can be folded down for easy transportation and storage.

My Verdict

The Razor E300 Electric Scooter is the top-of-the-range model and the extra power and control that it offers is certainly worth the extra money in my opinion. Your child will love the freedom that this scooter gives them to ride around the neighbourhood without experiencing the shame of being overtaken by little kids on pushbikes! Don’t worry, it is not fast enough to cause parents to have sleepless nights provided you always ensure that they wear a helmet (and possibly elbow and knee pads).

If you don’t need or want you or your child to have this extra power then the E100 and E200 scooters might be more suitable.

Color Options

The E300 comes in GRAY & BLUE:

Note: The Blue version is about $20 more expensive than the Gray version.
