Power Wheels Lil’ Quad – Battery Powered Ride Toys for Toddlers

April 15, 2014 By Kristian

Made by: Fisher Price
List Price: $82.99
Top Speed: 2 mph
Age Range: 1-3 years

Lil’ Quad Overview

The Power Wheels Lil’ Quad is one of the most popular battery ride toys for toddlers on the US market today.

It is designed for kids aged between 1 and 3 years of age and its rechargeable 6V battery is sufficiently powerful to enable it to reach a top speed of 2 mph on hard surfaces and cut grass. That might not sound like much to an adult, but it is more than enough to allow your toddler to have fun without creating havoc in your back yard or neighbourhood. Despite its slow top speed, you should still always ensure that your child is supervised whilst using the Lil’ Quad.

Don’t worry, your child won’t have to manage a complicated throttle since the Lil’ Quad’s forward motion is controlled by a simple push button mechanism. They just push the button to go and then release it to stop.

There are a number of very nice little features to make your child’s ride even more comfortable and convenient, including built-in footrests and a cargo rack on the back.

Not only can your child make the Quad go forwards by pushing the throttle button, but they also get to steer it too. They will absolutely love the thrill of making a vehicle move without having to push or pedal it and it is a great way for them to develop their motor skills, balance and body awareness.

One minor downside is that there is no reverse gear – this means that if they drive into a corner or cul-de-sac they have to get out and turn the Quad around or get a helping hand from the nearest grown up. I’m afraid that this is unavoidable with a vehicle that is designed for use by toddlers – I suspect that they would find it too difficult to master the art of reversing as well as learning to go forwards whilst steering away from the bushes.

The turning circle is quite large and, whilst this is a necessary safety feature, the Quad will work much better if you use it in a relatively large space. Otherwise, you will be forever turning them around or backing them out of corners.

The Lil’ Quad’s Key Features

  • Sporty ATV styling
  • Built-in footrests
  • Cargo rack on the back
  • Rechargeable 6V battery & charger supplied
  • Easy push-button throttle for simple stop and go
  • Rides low, so it’s easy for them to get on and off by themselves
  • Product dimensions: 12.8 x 16.2 x 26.2 inches
  • Product weight: 15.4 lbs
  • Child weight limit: 40 lbs / 28 kgs
  • Backed by Power Wheels 1 year limited bumper-to-bumper warranty

Assembling & Maintaining the Lil’ Quad

There is a small amount of assembly required before your child will be able to use the Quad, but it shouldn’t take you more than about 20 minutes. Don’t worry, unlike many other kids toys the supplied instructions are excellent. If you have any technical questions, I would be happy to check the instruction manual and get back to with an answer.

The battery should be charged for about 14 hours between uses, but for 18 hours prior to the first ever use. If you are buying this as a present for your child, I suggest that you charge the battery before the “big day” if you want to avoid a spectacular toddler melt-down as they impatiently wait for the 18 hour charging period to finally come to an end!

Once charged, the battery ought to last a couple of hours before it needs to be recharged again.

My Verdict

I absolutely love the Lil’ Quad and consider it an absolute steal at under $70. I promise you that the look on your child’s face when they first press the throttle button and realise that they have just made the vehicle move without anyone pushing or pedalling will be worth the purchase price on its own.
